The 150th anniversary of the birth of George Russell (on 10 April 1867 in Lurgan) comes at an appropriate time. The major focus of Russell’s life was on developing Ireland, materially and culturally. A poet, he seemed an unlikely choice as organizer for the newly established co-operative movement in Ireland in 1897.

As well as a painter, Russell was a poet, playwright, journalist, editor, critic, mystic and evangelist for the co-operative movement. Russell contributed occasional writings to mystical journals such as Lucifer and the Irish Theosophist which constitute the beginning of his literary career; they also brought about the genesis of the pen name by which he is best known, ‘Æ’ (or A.E.), derived from ‘Aeon’ (the first sound in the universe). Russell began to publish as Æ This is quite extraordinary and makes AE worthy of serious study. George Russell was a serious student of Eastern religions and singled out the Upanishads for special consideration.
